A Heartfelt Review of Veggie OUTLAWS!
As an author, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing your work come to life in someone else’s kitchen. That’s why I was overjoyed when food blogger Trish at TrishTalksBooks shared her thoughtful and glowing review of my cookbook, Veggie Outlaws: Most Wanted Vegan Recipes.
Trish and I first met at the Planted Expo in Vancouver, where we connected over our shared love for healthy, plant-based eating. I was thrilled to gift her a copy of Veggie Outlaws and even more thrilled to see her dive into the recipes, putting her own creative spin on them and sharing her experiences.
What Trish Loved About Veggie Outlaws
One of my favorite parts of her review was how much she enjoyed the playful personalities of the Veggie Outlaws. As Trish described them:
- Cashew Sue, the inclusive, welcoming one who invites everyone to the table.
- Strawberry Sal, the fearless myth-buster challenging vegan stereotypes.
- Carrot Rick, the intellectual and science buff.
- Potato Pat, the peacekeeper.
- Saucy Peanut, always bringing bold flavors.
- And of course, the mysterious Broccoli Bandit, sneaking into dishes when you least expect it!
Trish pointed out how these characters make veggies approachable and fun, especially for families and kids. Hearing her say that the Outlaws could turn reluctant veggie eaters into fans made my heart so happy—mission accomplished!
Trish’s Recipe Adventures
Trish didn’t just flip through the book; she rolled up her sleeves and brought the recipes to life. Here are some highlights from her kitchen:
- Crunchy Lettuce Wraps: With a trio of components (Crunchy Chickpeas, Hoisin Sauce, and Garlic-Ginger Dipping Sauce), this recipe became a summer dinner favorite. She called the sauces “vegan magic” and suggested doubling them because they’re just that good!
- Roasted Tofu with Snappy Peanut Sauce: Simple yet satisfying, this dish stood out thanks to the peanut sauce, which Trish described as having a citrus twist that made it irresistible.
- Cabbage-Apple Slaw: Fresh and tangy, this quick salad was a perfect way to use garden-fresh cabbage.
- Carrot-Ginger-Orange Cupcakes: Trish transformed this recipe into a layer cake, and her family loved it so much, her sister claimed she could eat a slice every day for the rest of her life!
What Makes Veggie Outlaws Special
Trish’s review captured so much of what I hoped to achieve with this book. She highlighted the ways it’s designed to be approachable, fun, and versatile:
- Inclusivity: A book for everyone—vegans, omnivores, and curious cooks alike.
- Kid Appeal: The Veggie Outlaws bring stories and personality to the recipes, making veggies exciting for younger eaters.
- Attention to Detail: With prep times, allergen info, and a handy index, the book makes navigating plant-based cooking easy.
Her words reminded me why I wrote Veggie Outlaws—to inspire people to try plant-based eating in a way that feels approachable, exciting, and above all, delicious.
Reading Trish’s review filled me with gratitude—not just for her kind words, but for the connection we’ve built through a shared love of food. Seeing the recipes come to life in her home and hearing how much her family enjoyed them made all the hard work of creating this book worthwhile.
If you’ve cooked from Veggie Outlaws, I’d love to hear about your favorite recipes or what’s on your plate. Share your experiences in the comments or tag me on social media—I can’t wait to see what you create!
Thank you, Trish, for such a thoughtful review. It means the world to me.
